Read the following passage then answer the questions. Write your answers on the answer sheet.

Although 80% of Australians live near cities, the cities are not as large as those in some other countries. Most people live in houses in suburbs – not in apartments. The suburbs usually have their own churches, schools and shopping centre. They also have recreational facilities. In large cities, like Sydney, the suburbs are often far from the town. Because many people commute to work, the traffic is slow and there are many traffic jams.

Alexander Fleming was born in 1881 in Scotland. He went to a small school in a village, and when he left school he didn’t go to university. He worked for five years in an office. But his brother, Tom, was a doctor and helped Fleming to go to university and study medicine. So he went to London University and in 1906 he became a doctor. In 1915, Fleming married Sarah McElroy, an Irish woman. They had one son.

During the First World War, many soldiers died in hospital because they didn’t have the right medicines. So after the war, Fleming tried to find a drug that could help them. He worked for many years and in 1928 he discovered a new drug and he called it “penicillin”. He later worked with an Australian and a German scientist to develop a drug that doctors could use. In 1945, they won the Nobel Prize in medicine for their work on penicillin.

Đọc đoạn văn sau và trả lời các câu hỏi:

All languages have rules for forming words and for ordering those words in meaningful sentences. In written languages, meaning is expressed through a of characters and rules for combining those characters. In spoken languages, meaning is expressed through a system of sounds and rules for combining them. Word order is more important in English than it is in some languages, such as Russian.

Like other languages, English is always changing, but it changes very slowly. People invent new words, borrow words from other languages, and change the meaning of words as needed. For example, the English word byte was invented by computer specialists in 1959. The word tomato was borrowed from Nahuatl, an American Indian language spoken in Mexico. The word meat once referred  to food in general. People learn English as well as other languages by listening, copying what they hear, and using the language. Most schoolchildren learn their first language easily – and sometime other languages as well.

Bài 11:

Read the passage, then decide if the statements that follow it are True or False.

It might sound strange to you but these are some important rules. If you want to pass examinations, then study grammar. However, if you want to become fluent in English, try to learn English without studying too much grammar because that will only slow you down and confuse you. You will think about the rules when creating sentences instead of speaking naturally like a native speaker. Some native speakers do not know so many grammar rules as non-native students do.

Everyone can speak at least one language whether they are intelligent, or lack some brain power. This could be achieved by being surrounded by that language at all times. You may notice that there are also some people who study abroad and learn very little. That is because they go to an English speaking school, but find friends from their own country and don’t practice English. Some others can speak English well because they live in an English speaking environment.

Therefore, why don’t you surround yourself with English? Make rules with some friends that you will only speak English when meeting up for a coffee, for example. You can also carry around an iPod and listen to English as much as possible.

     Choose the best one

A popular theory  explaining the evolution of the universe is known as the Big Bang Model. According to the model, at some time between ten and twenty billion years  ago, all present matter and energy were compressed into a small ball only a few kilometres  in diameter. It was, in effect, an atom that contained in the form of pure energy all of the components of the entire universe. Then, at a moment  in time that astronomers refer to as T = 0, the ball exploded, hurling the energy into space. Expansion occurred. As the energy cooled, most of it became matter in the form of protons, neutrons and electrons. These original particles combined to form hydrogen and helium, and continue to expand. Matter formed into galaxies with stars and planets.
