Read the letter and answer the questions

Dear Mom,

This is just a quick note to tell you how the holiday is going.

We’re staying in a nice hotel in a quiet part of town, so you can imagine how we feel. As you know, this is a small city, and the people are very kind and friendly. We have had some good weather since we got here, so we are feeling very happy. We have seen some of the beautiful sights and a few museums, and we thought they were very impressive. Yesterday we decided to go for a swim, and we went to a nice beach where the water was blue and clean. Last night, we had a delicious meal in a wonderful restaurant. The food and services were excellent. When the bill came, we could hardly believe it, as it was so cheap. As our hobbies are sightseeing and swimming, we enjoyed the holiday so much.

Anyway, I’d better stop, but I’ll write again soon.

Love,

Mary & John

Mozart, who was born on January 27, 1756 in the Austrian city of Salzburg, was neither the first nor the last child prodigy, but he was certainly the greatest. He was born into a moderately prosperous family where his unmatched musical genius made itself known extremely early. Mozart began learning to play the harpsichord at three and his earliest known work was composed in 1761 when he was five, the age at which he also first appeared in public. From the age of six, when his father took him on the first foreign tour, Mozart toured the courts and musical centres of Austria, Germany, France, England, Holland, Switzerland and Italy. It has been calculated that Mozart spent almost a third of his short life - he died at the age of 35 - travelling. As Mozart matured, he continued to tour and give concerts. Mozart also wrote a lot of operas. His first opera, Mitridate, Re di Ponto, was performed in Milan when he was 14, and it was the first of many successes in the theatre.

Air pollution is a serious problem in many cities. Motor vehicles, factories and other sources create so much air pollution that it may hang in the air like dirty fog. Air pollution threatens the health of the people who live in cities. City wastes cause water pollution when they are poured into the waterways. These wastes kill fish and make some areas unfit for swimming. In addition, many large cities have difficulties in disposing of their garbage. The amount of garbage grows each year, but places to put it are quickly filling up. Citizens, governments, industries, scientists, and business people must work together in different ways to gradually reduce pollution. For example, most cities have introduced recycling programmes.

I live in a small village called Henfield. There are about 500 people here. The village is quiet and life here is slow and easy. You never have to queue in shops or banks. People never throw their rubbish in the streets , so the village is always clean. The  air is also very clean because there’s not much heavy traffic. It’s much more friendly here than in a city. Everyone knows everyone and if someone has a problem, there are always people who can help. However, there are some things I don’t like about Henfield. One thing is that there’s not much to do in the evening . We haven't got any cinemas or theaters. Another problem is that people always talk about each other and  everyone knows what everyone is doing . But I still prefer village life to life in a big city.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

It’s often said that we learn things at the wrong time. University students frequently do the minimum of work because they’re crazy about a good social life instead. Children often scream before their piano practice because it’s so boring. They have to be given gold stars and medals to be persuaded to swim, or have to be bribed to take exams. But the story is different when you’re older.

Over the years, l’ve done my share of adult learning. At 30, l went to a college and did courses in History and English. It was an amazing experience. For starters, I was paying, so there was no reason to be late - I was the one frowning and drumming my fingers if the tutor was late. not the other way round. lndeed. if I could persuade him to linger for an extra five minutes, it was a bonus, not a nuisance. I wasn‘t frightened to ask questions, and homework was a pleasure not a pain. When I passed an exam, I had passed it for me and me alone. not for my parents or my teachers. The satisfaction I got was entirely personal.

Some people fear going back to school because they worry that their brains have got rusty. But the joy is that, although some parts have rusted up, your brain has learnt all kinds of other things since you were young. It has learnt to think independently and flexibly and is much better at relating one thing to another. What you lose in the rust department, you gain in the maturity department.

In some ways, age is a positive plus. For instance, when you‘re older, you get less frustrated. Experience has told you that. if you’re calm and simply do something carefully again and again. eventually you‘ll get the hang of it. The confidence you have in other areas - from being able to drive a car. perhaps - means that if you can’t, say, build a chair instantly, you don’t. like a child. want to destroy your first pathetic attempts. Maturity tells you that you will, with application, eventually get there.

I hated piano lessons at school, but I was good at music. And coming back to it, with a teacher who could explain why certain exercises were useful and with musical concepts that. at the age often, I could never grasp, was magical. Initially. I did feel a bit strange, thumping out a piece that I’d played for my school exams, with just as little comprehension of what the composer intended as I'd had all those years before. But soon, complex emotions that I never knew poured out from my fingers, and suddenly I could understand why practice makes perfect.

Psychologists have debated a long time about whether a child’s upbringing can give it the ability to do outstandingly well. Some think that it is impossible to develop genius and say that it is simply something a person is born with. Others, however, argue that the potential for great achievement can be developed. The truth lies somewhere between these two extremes.

It seems very obvious that being born with the right qualities from gifted parents will increase a child’s ability to do well. However, this ability will be fully realized only with the right upbringing and opportunities. As one psychologist says, “To have afast car, you need both a good engine and fuel.” Scientists have recently assessed intelligence, achievement, and ability in 50 sets of identical twinsthat were separated shortly after birth and brought up by different parents. They found that achievement was based on intelligence, and later influenced by the child’s environment.

One case involving very intelligent twins was quoted. One of the twins received a normal upbringing, and performed well. The other twin, however, was brought up by extremely supportive parents and given every possible opportunity to develop its abilities. That win, though starting out with the same degree of intelligence as the other, performed even better.

This case reflects the general principle of intelligence and ability. The more favorable the environment, the more a child’s intelligence and ability are developed. However, there is no link between intelligence and the socioeconomic level of a child’s family. In other words, it does not matter how poor or how rich a family is, as this does not affect intelligence.      Gifted people cannot be created by supportive parents, but they can be developed by them. One professor of music said that outstanding musicians usually started two or three years earlier than ordinary performers, often because their parents had recognized their ability. These musicians then needed at least ten years’ hard work and training in order to reach the level they were capable of attaining.

People who want to have very gifted children are given the following advice: - Marry an intelligent person.

- Allow children to follow their own interests rather than the interests of the parents. - Start a child’s education early but avoid pushing the child too hard.

- Encourage children to play; for example, playingwith musical instruments is essential for a child  who wants to become an outstanding musician.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Watching for wildlife in the forest, we rarely see past the surface of things. Standing on the ground floor, we scan the leafy rafters, entirely overlooking the leaving world in the soil beneath our feet.

The forest’s basement is a secret world. Different from our own world, the soil seems quiet, even dead. But life bustles down below: a cubic inch of topsoil may contain billions of creatures.

Predators and prey roam beneath as well as above the forest floor. Furthermore, those upstairs and downstairs forest denizens live closely linked lives. Soil-dwelling bacteria and fungi break down dead organic matter into molecules that plants above ground use for food. Those plants, as well as animals, mature and die, leaving more organic matter to fuel the folks downstairs.

Like a well-insulated house, the soil protects its tenants from extreme temperatures, and from rain and snow. it also provides a bulwark against predators from the surface world. But the dense, protecting soil also limits mobility. Soil creatures must be specially equipped in order to travel easily through their dark, constricting realm.

Earthworms and ants are the champion earth-movers, creating channels that allow air and water to enter the soil. While ants travel relatively far from their nests, earthworms work small areas, reprocessing vast amounts of soil into fertile “waste". In a single year, as much as 36 tons of soil may pass through the alimentary tracts of all the earthworms living in an acre of soil.

Notes:

- denizen (n): an animal, plant or person that lives in or is often in a particular place.

- mature (v): to become completely grown physically or developed mentally.

- fuel (v): to supply a system with a substance which can be burnt to provide heat or power.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Jupiter is the largest and most massive planet and is fifth in order of distance from the sun. It is well placed for observation for several months in every year and on average is brightest of the planets apart from Venus, though for relatively brief periods Mars may outshine it. Jupiter’s less than ten-hour rotation period gives it the shortest day in the solar system insofar as the principal perpendicular of the orbital plane is only just over 30, less than that for any other planet.

The most famous mark on Jupiter is the Great Red Spot. It has shown variations in both intensity and color, and at times it has been invisible, but it always returns after a few years. At its greatest extent may be 40,000 kilometers long and 14,000 kilometers wide, so its surface area is greater than that of Earth. Though the latitude of the Great Red Spot varies little, it drifts about in longitude. Over the past century, the total longitudinal drift has amounted to approximately 1200°. The latitude is generally very close to 22°. lt was once thought that the Great Red Spot might be a solid or semisolid body floating in Jupiter’s outer gas. However, the Pioneer and Voyager results have refuted that idea and proven the Great Red Spot to be a phenomenon of Jovian meteorology. lts longevity may well be due to its exceptional size, but there are signs that it is decreasing in size, and it may not be permanent. Several smaller red spots have been seen occasionally but have not lasted.

Notes:

- refute (v):  to say or prove that a person, statement, opinion, etc, is wrong or false.
