Swedish people have a holiday on the summer solstice. After the winter, they are ready to celebrate. They call this holiday Midsummer Day because it comes in the middle of their summer, June 21. It’s a day for people to be outside.
Swedes decorate poles with flowers and ribbons, and children dance around the poles and sing. They also play special games, such as one in which the children pretend to be small animals. In the evening, it’s time for the adults to celebrate. They make a festive meal. For dessert, they have a special summer treat: strawberries and cream. Afterward, they dance. Many Swedes stay awake until the sun comes up, which is earlier than you might think. In the north, the sun rises at 3 a.m. in the summer. It is not surprising that Midsummer Day is a favorite holiday in Sweden. Summer is a time to treasure for people who live so far north.
