Graphic novels, as the name suggests, are books written and illustrated in the style of a comic book. Adults may feel that graphic novels do not help children become good readers. They believe that this type of reading material somehow prevents "real" reading. Many librarians and teachers are now accepting graphic novels as proper literature for children as they (32) young people and motivate them to read. Các tiểu thuyết bằng hình ảnh, như tên cho thấy, là những cuốn sách được viết và minh hoạ theo phong cách của một cuốn truyện tranh. Người trưởng thành có thể cảm thấy rằng các tiểu thuyết bằng hình ảnh không giúp trẻ em trở thành những độc giả giỏi. Họ tin rằng loại tài liệu đọc này bằng cách nào đó không cho phép đọc "thực". Tuy nhiên, nhiều tiểu thuyết bằng hình ảnh chất lượng hiện nay được xem như một phương pháp kể chuyện cùng cấp với tiểu thuyết, phim hoặc sách âm thanh. Nhiều cán bộ thư viện và giáo viên hiện chấp nhận tiểu thuyết bằng hình ảnh như là văn học phù hợp cho trẻ em vì chúng thu hút thanh thiếu niên và khuyến khích họ đọc. Điều này đặc biệt đúng với trẻ em không muốn đọc, đặc biệt là trẻ em trai.
Người học ngôn ngữ cũng được thúc đẩy bởi tiểu thuyết bằng hình ảnh bởi vì những hình ảnh cung cấp đầu mối cho ý nghĩa của từ. Vì vậy, họ sẽ học từ vựng mới nhanh hơn. Nhiều giáo viên đã thành công lớn khi họ sử dụng tiểu thuyết hình ảnh với học sinh của họ, đặc biệt là trong các lĩnh vực tiếng Anh, xã hội học và nghệ thuật. Ý tưởng rằng tiểu thuyết hình ảnh quá đơn giản để được coi là cách đọc nghiêm túc không còn vững chắc. Việc đọc chúng chắc chắn có thể giúp học sinh phát triển các kỹ năng cần thiết để đọc những tác phẩm đầy thử thách hơn.
