The Return of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is making a comeback after being overlooked in the 1990s. Initially popular in the 1980s, AI faded out but returned to the public eye with the release of AI, a film about a robot boy. This sparked renewed debate about AI, especially within the computer industry, where researchers and executives now use the term without irony. While AI has yet to fully live up to its early promises, many products now rely on technologies originally developed by AI researchers.
The term "artificial intelligence" was coined in 1956 by pioneers like Marvin Minsky and John McCarthy, and initially included a range of fields like operations research, cybernetics, and logic. Researchers aimed to replicate human abilities in machines, though early AI efforts were often fragmented.
By 1985, AI had reached its peak. For years, AI researchers had implied that a breakthrough was just around the corner. Marvin Minsky said in 1967 that within a generation the problem of creating 'artificial intelligence' would be substantially solved. Public expectations were high, but technological breakthroughs, such as thinking computers and household robots, failed to materialize. This led to a decline in AI's popularity by the late 1980s, as researchers focused on specialized subfields. AI came to be seen as distant and unachievable.
However, recent advancements have revived interest. For example, HNC Software's new AI approach for detecting camouflaged vehicles or extracting voices from noise has sparked attention. With the growing issue of information overload, AI's potential in filtering and categorizing information is gaining renewed focus. Another factor that may boost the prospects for AI in the near future is that investors are now looking for firms using clever technology, rather than just a clever business model, to differentiate themselves. This shift could lead to more AI companies emerging to meet these challenges.
