Question 53 - 60: Read the passage carefully.
1. Over the past decade, electric vehicles (EVs) have rapidly gained popularity in cities worldwide. Governments are introducing incentives such as tax breaks and charging infrastructure to encourage residents to switch from petrol-powered cars. This trend is driven by a growing awareness of air pollution and climate change, especially in densely populated urban centers.
2. One significant advantage of EVs is their ability to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike traditional cars, EVs produce no exhaust emissions during operation, which helps improve air quality in cities struggling with smog and respiratory health problems. Some urban areas have even started banning petrol cars altogether in an effort to combat pollution.
3. The integration of EVs into city life is supported by advancements in battery technology and renewable energy. Modern batteries last longer and charge faster, making electric cars more practical for daily use. Additionally, cities are increasingly powering charging stations with solar or wind energy, further lowering the environmental footprint.
4. However, challenges remain, including the high initial cost of EVs and the limited range of older models. Infrastructure development also lags in some regions, causing “range anxiety” among drivers who fear running out of power away from charging points. Despite this, many experts believe that these hurdles will diminish as technology progresses and economies of scale reduce costs.
5. Beyond environmental benefits, electric vehicles are reshaping urban design and transportation culture. They are quieter than combustion engine cars, reducing noise pollution and creating more pleasant city environments. Urban planners are also adapting by creating dedicated lanes for EVs and integrating them with public transport to encourage sustainable commuting.
6. As cities strive to become greener and more livable, electric vehicles stand at the forefront of this transformation. While the transition requires significant investment and coordination, the long-term benefits for public health and climate resilience make EVs an essential part of urban futures.
