In recent years, cities have expanded beyond their traditional borders. The suburbs are growing rapidly, spreading into smaller provinces. This trend is turning farmland and countryside into residential zones for city dwellers, a process known as urbanisation. This shift affects not only landscapes but also local communities and ecosystems. Although this phenomenon is not new, the speed and scale of urban growth today are unprecedented. Some cities are experiencing a sharp rise in population as more people move in for job opportunities and better services.
One major reason behind this trend can be put down to increased car ownership and improved living standards. With more people able to drive, commuting from suburban areas has become easier. Public transport systems have also expanded, making daily travel more accessible. Additionally, life in the suburbs is often more attractive. Houses tend to be larger, and there is more green space. Many suburban apartments are located near parks, pools, or shopping centers, offering a better quality of life compared to crowded city centers.
However, urbanisation comes with challenges. It contributes to pollution and land waste. For example, suburban residents who drive long distances to the city increase air pollution. In cities like Hanoi, where cars have become more popularised, air quality has deteriorated. Another concern is that land, instead of being used for agriculture or conservation, is often cleared to build housing. Companies are chopping down trees near rural areas to construct new buildings, which harms the environment.
As urbanisation continues, it is crucial to think carefully about where we live and how our choices affect the planet. Urban planning and sustainable development must be part of the solution. While cities will keep growing, we must also protect our environment.
