1. Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan, is on the brink of an unprecedented crisis: it may become the first modern capital to completely deplete its water supply, according to a report by Mercy Corps. Years of unsustainable water use, rapid urban expansion, the effects of climate change, and poor management have severely depleted the city’s underground water reserves.
2. At present, Kabul extracts around 44 million cubic metres more groundwater annually than what is naturally replenished. 3. Over the past three decades, the city’s population has surged—from under two million to several million today—particularly since 2001. As the population has grown, so too has the demand for water, but the overreliance on groundwater, which is being extracted at a rate far exceeding its renewal, has created a severe imbalance.
4. This crisis is not solely about the scarcity of water, but also poses serious public health and humanitarian risks. Up to 80% of Kabul’s groundwater is contaminated, leading to frequent illnesses among residents. One local government employee from the Taimani district told CNN that his family regularly falls ill after drinking tap water or even brushing their teeth at home.
5. Many households are compelled to cut back on food and other essentials to afford water or to dig private wells, even though the water they access is often still unsafe. Those who cannot afford wells must depend on expensive water tankers or walk long distances to obtain water from mosques or other public sources.
6. A 42-year-old mother of four shared her frustration, saying, “We have no access to safe drinking water. The shortage is disrupting our daily lives.” The situation is particularly difficult for women, who, under Taliban restrictions, must be accompanied by a male guardian to go outside. Climate change has only worsened the problem: snowmelt from the Hindu Kush mountains, which once replenished groundwater, has significantly decreased and has been replaced by unpredictable flash floods due to irregular rainfall.
7. The crisis has been further intensified by political instability and a sharp drop in foreign aid following the Taliban's return to power in 2021. The suspension of U.S. assistance, including USAID funding, has halted numerous critical water and sanitation projects. UNICEF has already warned that Kabul could entirely deplete its groundwater supply by 2030 if these trends continue.
