Coral reefs are often called the "rainforests of the sea" due to their incredible biodiversity. These underwater ecosystems are formed by tiny animals called coral polyps, which secrete calcium carbonate skeletons that build up over time. While they cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, coral reefs support an estimated 25% of all marine life.
Reef formation is a slow process, with some coral species growing less than an inch per year. Corals thrive in warm, shallow, and clear water, where sunlight can reach the algae living within their tissues. These algae, through photosynthesis, provide the coral with essential nutrients.
Unfortunately, coral reefs are facing numerous threats. Climate change is a major concern, as rising ocean temperatures can lead to coral bleaching. This occurs when corals expel the algae living within them, causing the coral to turn white and become more susceptible to disease.
Pollution from coastal development, overfishing, and destructive fishing practices also pose significant risks to coral reef ecosystems. These threats can damage coral, disrupt the delicate balance of the reef, and ultimately lead to their decline. Protecting these valuable ecosystems is crucial for the health of our oceans and the countless species that depend on them.
