The attraction of job opportunities and better life is a major reason why people go to cities. Currently, half the world's population lives in cities, and by 2050 this will be two-thirds. Despite good opportunities the cities offer, they also bring two of the most serious issues: poverty and environmental damage.
Cities continue to face the problem of poverty. There have been efforts by the government to address the problem, but many people still live in poverty-stricken areas. High living costs, and a lack of job opportunities and social services all worsen the situation. Nevertheless, governments, NGOs and community groups are all trying to solve the problem by improving housing options, offering job training, building more educational facilities and providing affordable medical care.
Environmental degradation is another serious problem in cities. As cities spread out, the demand for resources will increase. That will lead to an increase in resource consumption, which in turn produces more waste. This will have a big impact on the environment, causing serious problems, such as water and air pollution, and even flash floods. Renewable energy, eco-friendly transportation and effective waste management strategies could help improve the environment in cities.
