In recent years, Vietnam has been increasingly subjected to more severe and unpredictable weather events, with climate change playing a pivotal role in this transformation. [II] While central areas such as Da Nang, Hue, and Nha Trang have been particularly affected, large urban centers like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have not been spared. [III] The floods have caused extensive damage to homes, agricultural lands, infrastructure, and even historical monuments. Many families have been forced to evacuate their homes, and some individuals narrowly avoided drowning as water levels rose abruptly. [IV]
Climate experts emphasize the urgent need for Vietnam to enhance its weather forecasting capabilities and flood protection measures. This includes the development of mobile alert systems and reinforcing riverbanks, as outdated infrastructure and practices are no longer sufficient in the face of increasingly extreme weather conditions. Research further highlights that Vietnam ranks among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of global climate change.
