Moving to a new country is always a challenge, especially when the culture is quite different from your own. When I first arrived in Denmark from my home country, I was struck by several aspects of Danish culture and way of life. Some things were easy to get used to, while others took more time and effort.
One of the biggest cultural differences is the reserved nature of Danes. Coming from a more outgoing and expressive culture, it took me a while to get accustomed to the quiet personalities and value of personal space here. Danes tend to be more private people who don't readily make small talk with strangers. In group settings, I found they listen more than they speak up. At first I wondered if people disliked me, but I soon realized this was just their way.
The Danish work culture of flat hierarchies, consensus decision making, and work-life balance was refreshing. Managers treat employees as equals and coworkers address each other informally. Discussions are open and everyone is expected to voice their perspective. At the same time, Danes separate work and personal life, leaving work stress behind when they go home for the day.
Coming from a warm climate, getting through the long, dark Danish winters proved difficult at first. I had to get myself warm clothes and learn to enjoy hyggelig comforts like candlelight and hot drinks. But the sunny summer days more than make up for it with almost endless stretches of beautiful light.
The Danish language has also been a challenge, though English is so widely spoken that it is possible to get by without learning much Danish at first. I am still studying Danish through classes and immersion. Most Danes are impressed and appreciative when foreigners make an effort with their difficult language.
Overall, while some aspects of Danish culture have been harder to adjust to than others, I have come to appreciate and enjoy the relaxed, upfront, and egalitarian Danish way of life. With an open mind and willingness to adapt, it is very possible for a foreigner to get along well here.
