The Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) is the world’s oldest sea turtle research and conservation group. Founded in 1959, its mission is to ensure the survival of sea turtles through research, education, training, advocacy and protection of the natural habitats upon which they depend. Based in Florida, the organization carries out worldwide programs to conserve and recover sea turtle populations. World Sea Turtle Day is celebrated every June 16th to raise awareness about the plight of these fascinating reptiles. Turtles are among the most threatened groups of animals on the planet and are in desperate need of conservation help. More than half of their 300 species are threatened with extinction according to IUCN Red List criteria. Primary threats to turtles and tortoises include habitat loss and degradation, high-volume unsustainable consumptive exploitation for food and medicinal products, and illegal international pet trade. The Sea Turtle Conservancy envisions a world where all species of turtles and tortoises ultimately thrive in the wild. The Sea Turtle Conservancy focuses its work on the following strategic program areas:
1. Conserving species in their natural habitat, including land acquisition.
2. Maintaining captive breeding programs to help restore natural populations.
3. Monitoring and helping to prevent trade that threatens species.
4. Outreach and spreading global awareness.
